We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Education recently released the scores for STAR testing and Monroe Elementary continues to perform among the best.  The state sets a goal for each school at 800 for our Academic Performance Index or API.  This year, Monroe earned an API score of 833, gaining 24 points from the previous year's score of 809.  Congratulations to students and staff for their outstanding efforts!  Way to go Mustangs!

Principal’s Message

Welcome to the Monroe Elementary Web Page.

Over the past few years, we have experienced a tremendous amount of success at Monroe due to the hard work of students and staff.  We are proud to share that this past year, Monroe was honored with a Title I Academic Achievement Award from the California Department of Education because of our academic achievements.  Of the more than 6,000 schools eligible, Monroe was among the 200 schools selected from across California, and the only school selected in Kings County.   These and other achievements have helped to distinguish Monroe as one of the premiere elementary schools in the area, reflecting the best of what our community has to offer.

At Monroe, we hold students to the highest standards of excellence in both academics and behavior and encourage each of them to meet their maximum potential.     Through academic and social development, we know that our students are preparing to become tomorrow’s leaders.   We hope that the lessons they learn while at Monroe will one day enable them to accomplish their life’s goals and to make positive contributions to the community they live in.

Parents and guardians play a critical role in their child’s education and it is because of this that we promote a positive relationship with our school.  Every parent or guardian is encouraged to be active in their child’s education and there are many ways to become involved at our school.  Take the time to become a parent volunteer, or participate in our Parent Teacher Club, serve as a member of our School Site Council or English Learner Advisory Committee, or just come have some fun at one of our Literacy Nights or other school events.  Whatever time you can spare, your involvement will make a positive impact on your child and others.

If you have any questions or need any assistance, our doors are open.  We look forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a successful school year.

Sincerely,

Jaime Martinez

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING 7TH GRADE

A TB skin test, given within the 6 months prior to school, is required for ALL Kings County students entering 7th grade.  In addition children entering grades 8 through 12 who are newly entering or newly re-entering a Kings county school (meaning they were not enrolled the previous school session in any Kings county school) will also need a TB skin test.

In addition the state of California now REQUIRES that all students entering 7th through 12th grades must have received the Tdap (not Td) booster vaccination sometime on or after their seventh (7th) birthday. This means that if your child has not received any vaccinations (other than flu) since before starting Kindergarten, chances are they will need this vaccine to start school next year.

*Either of these can be received either through your own doctor/clinic or the Kings County Health Department.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Do you Boxtop?

Turkey Time! Collect 10 boxtops at a time and complete the Turkey Time Collection Sheet.  Turn in to the office for a chance to win one of five Cold Stone Creamery Gift Cards.  Deadline to turn in collection sheets is November 30, 2011.  Drawing to select winner will be held December 5th during morning announcements.

Visit www.boxtops4education.com and if you haven't already, and register for an account.  Monroe will get a bonus just for having you register.  Plus visit their website often for bonus boxtop opportunities.

Also, when you register on Boxtops 4 Education, you will have access to many money saving coupons on your favorite products, which also have boxtops!  It's a win for you and for our school.

You can also access the Online Shopping Marketplace for your online shopping.  You simply login to your Boxtops 4 Education account, and enter the Online Shopping Marketplace and shop your favorite stores.  These participating merchants will donate back to our school, a percentage of your purchase amount!

Boxtops 4 Education is a great program because it helps our school simply by clipping the boxtops off of products you already purchase for your every day needs.  Plus, with the additional rewards to the school when you shop online or the bonus programs they offer from time to time, the possibilities to reach our goal is definitely possible.

We appreciate the continued efforts our parents and students put forth in clipping those boxtops and turning them in.

All monies earned from the boxtops program benefit our students directly by way of funding study trips and student incentives such as prizes and fun day activities.  Keep up the great work!
Character Counts...

Let the Butterfly Struggle

There’s a parable about a mother who discovered a butterfly struggling mightily to escape its cocoon through a tiny opening at the top. She became concerned when the creature seemed to give up after making no progress. Certain that the butterfly wouldn’t make it out without help, she enlarged the hole.

On it’s next try, the butterfly wriggled out easily. But the young woman’s joy turned to horror when she saw its wings were shriveled and useless. Her well-intentioned intervention had interrupted a natural process. Forcing the butterfly to squeeze through a small opening is nature’s way of assuring that blood from the creature’s body is pushed into the wings. By making it easier, she deprived the butterfly of strong wings.

Childhood, too, is a sort of cocoon. If a healthy adult is to emerge, parents must allow, even encourage, their children to struggle, make mistakes, learn from them, and pay the price for bad judgments and conduct.

Of course, good parents protect their children from serious harm, but being overprotective can itself inflict damage. Adversity is not always an enemy. Teaching can help a young person develop wings strengthened by self-confidence and self-reliance.

ONLINE ENROLLMENT

You can pre-enroll your child online by completing and then printing your registration forms and bring them to the school to finalize your child's enrollment.  Please be sure to bring with you the following documentation when finalizing your child's enrollment.
  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization Record
  • Proof of Address
  • Proof of Physical Exam (Kinder/1st Grade)
