Principal's Message

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Monroe Elementary web page. The Monroe staff is excited to have you as a part of the Monroe Mustang family. The Monroe web page is designed to provide you with useful information about upcoming events at our school along with contact information and other important information to help you during this school year.
At Monroe, we are committed to supporting our students as they work toward achieving their full academic and social potential. We dedicate ourselves to providing a quality education to every student by setting and maintaining high expectations for achievement and behavior. Students at Monroe are encouraged to show their Mustang pride by doing their best in all that they do, all of the time.
At Monroe, we believe that it takes a partnership between families and the school to make a difference in our students’ lives. We encourage all parents and guardians to be an active part of their child’s education by becoming involved at our school. Parents and guardians of Monroe students have opportunities to volunteer in classrooms, attend Back to School Night and other school events. They can also become members of the School Site Council (S.S.C.), English Learner Advisory Committee (E.L.A.C.), or Parent Teacher Club (P.T.C.). Information regarding each of these activities can be obtained by contacting the Monroe office at 585-3745.
On behalf of the entire Monroe staff, we welcome you to the Monroe family and we look forward to working with each of you toward building a strong educational foundation for your child.
Sincerely,
Jaime Martinez
Principal

| ASBESTOS 3 YEAR REINSPECTION |
In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), in December 1997 we performed inspections of each of our school buildings for asbestos-containing building materials. The inspection findings and asbestos management plans have been on file in each school administrative office since that time.
The EPA requires us to perform reinspections of the asbestos materials every three years. During the month of November 2009, accredited asbestos inspectors performed these reinspections.
Since the last three-year reinspection, the flooring at Jefferson School that was either tested or assumed to contain asbestos was abated from the library, classrooms, staff room and restrooms in October 2009. In September 2007, a 250 sq. ft. section of cafeteria roofing material that was tested to contain asbestos was removed and replaced at Jefferson School. In June 2007 the flooring that was either tested or assumed to contain asbestos was removed from Room 101 at Wilson Jr. High School and replaced with carpet.
All other asbestos materials in these schools are in good condition and we will continue to manage them in place, as recommended by the accredited management planner.
The results of the reinspection are on file in the Management Plan in each school office. Everyone is welcome to view these anytime during normal school hours (M-F, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.). The Asbestos Program Manager, Gerry Mulligan, is available to answer any questions you may have about asbestos in our buildings at 585-3628.

| MARCH 2ND - CELEBRATE READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY! |
Read Across America Day is celebrated on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools and libraries participate by bringing together kids and books. Monroe would like to welcome a special guest Mr. Mike to celebrate this day. Mr. Mike is the author and illustrator of four books: New Pet (a picture book), and three poetry books - Swimming in Chocolate, Lemon Drop Rain and Over the Top. Book order forms and more information will be sent home sometime this month.

| PARENT TEACHER CLUB CORNER | The Parent Teacher Club is seeking parents/guardians who would like to become classroom parents or Committee Members. Classroom parents help out in the classroom and assist in coordinating classroom parties, coordinating volunteers for study trips and assist in fundraising activities. The time commitment is as little as 1-2 hours per month. The Monroe Parent Teacher Club is a collaborative group of parents and teachers who work together to ensure our students are able to experience extra curricular activities at school including study trips and incentives for good behavior and attendance. Our group is only as successful as the parents and teachers who contribute to making it a success. The Parent Club provides over 95% of the funding for study trips throughout the year. For more information, contact Christina Mora at 585-3745. | |
|
| CHAPERONES/VOLUNTEERS | Although it is still early in the school year, it is never too early to think about being a chaperone for study trips. Each year a new application must be submitted and approved by the HESD Board of Trustees, even if you have been approved in the past. If you have not been previously approved, the application process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months. Please remember, parents can not attend study trips if they are not approved for the 2009-2010 school year. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the office at 585-3745. | |
|
| DROP OFF AND PICK UP OF STUDENTS - MONROE DRIVE AREA | When dropping off or picking up your student on the Monroe Drive, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE. The Driver must remain with the vehicle to keep traffic flowing. The Monroe Circle is a NO PARKING ZONE. We understand that this area gets congested at AM drop off and PM pick up time, however, we ask that you please be patient in watitng for your child to be dismissed. There is no double parking. The crosswalk should also be clear of vehicles. Students will not be released to double parked cars. | |
|
| ABSENCE VERIFICATION | Parents are urged to notify the office by 8am on the date of an absence or as soon thereafter as possible. Please provide a reason for the student’s absence within five days of the student’s return to school following the absence. If the parent/guardian does not contact the school to clear an absence within 5 days, the absence will remain “uncleared” and will be considered Unexcused. Doctor notes will also only be accepted up to the 5th day following the student’s return to school. | |

We will work together to provide students with a safe environment in which they can discover their potential and strengthen their motivation for living and learning. As tomorrow’s leaders, students will be prepared to participate and function effectively in society.”
