Traffic Flow

Traffic Flow

As of January 9, 2012, Simas Parking lot drop off/pick up area will be enforcing the right turn (heading north) on Fitzgerald. In a recent review of the traffic flow surrounding Simas school, City of Hanford Engineers have made the following recommendation to help ease the traffic concerns on the Simas campus.  To help ensure that the right turn is adhered to, parking blocks and cones will be put in place during the winter recess directing traffic to turn right onto Fitzgerald Lane.

Please remember that our number one goal is to ensure the safety of our students.  We appreciate your full cooperation and support.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs. Duvall at 585-3790, or HESD Director of Facilities at 585-3628.

Student Absences

When a student is absent, the parent/guardian may send a dated note, call the school office or the Attendance Line which is available 24 hours 585-3792.  Do not send your student to school if he/she has a fever of 100 or above, or is vomiting.  When a student has ten (10) excused absences for illness, a physician’s note will be required.  However, a physician’s note may be required anytime the school deems it necessary.

Tardies & Truancies

Regular and timely attendance is one of the best ways to promote active “Responsibility” in your child, which is one of the six Character Pillars that our school and our city are committed to upholding.  Please note that school begins daily at 8:00 a.m. A tardy is defined as any student not in the classroom when the instructional bell rings at 8:00 a.m.  Any student tardy at the beginning of the day must report to the office prior to going to class to receive an admit slip.  Students who accumulate 7 or more tardies/truancy’s will be assigned noon detention from 11:40-12:00 on Thursdays.

Student Medication

All Medications Must Be Kept in the Office. New medication forms are required for each new school year.

State law requires that any medication taken by your child while at school must be taken under adult supervision.  Included with the medication must be a doctor’s prescription and a form completed by the parent or guardian giving permission for the medication to be given to the child. The prescription on the medication must match the doctor’s order. Non-prescription drugs taken at school also require a doctor's prescription and school form completed by parent or guardian.

Breakfast and Lunch Program

Hanford Elementary School District serves nutritious meals every day.  Children from families whose income is within the levels shown on the back of the lunch application are eligible for either free or reduced lunch costs.  Parents can deposit money in their child’s account, in any amount, at any time.  We strongly suggest and encourage parents to prepay using a check, rather than cash.  Checks should be made payable to HESD Meal Program.  Money deposited into the student’s account can be used to purchase breakfast, lunch, or milk.  When sending in prepayment money, please include the child’s name, ID number, and room number on the envelope or check.  Students keep the same ID numbers from grade to grade and from HESD School to HESD School.  Breakfast - 60¢ (regular price)  30¢ (reduced price)  Lunch - $1.10 (regular price) 40¢ (reduced price)  Milk  30¢.

Volunteer/Visitor Procedures

Simas School welcomes and encourages parent involvement at the school site.  Due to the increased awareness of safety on campus and the need for uninterrupted instruction, the district has formulated guidelines for volunteer procedures at all HESD schools.  The education code gives schools the right to prohibit or limit volunteers.  If you would like to volunteer in our school, you will need to complete an application and be approved through our school district. This must be done before you will be allowed in the classroom or attend study trips with students.  Once you have been approved, times and dates will need to be scheduled in advance with your child’s teacher before volunteering in the classroom.  Parents wishing to observe in the classroom must make an appointment ahead of the visit and a time will be scheduled for your visit.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found rack is OVERFLOWING. Please remind your child to check the rack, located in the cafeteria, for their belongings. We will begin donating items to charity at the end of the school year.

Student Birthdays

This year, we have many students with severe food allergies, therefore, we will not be allowing food snacks or goody bags to be brought to school for student birthdays.  We recommend that you purchase your child’s favorite book and donate it to the class or the school library on your child’s behalf.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
