STAR Test Results

Dear Parents:

In July you will be receiving a report and an explanation of your child’s test results for the California Standardized Testing and Report (STAR) program, administered during May 2011.  For the thirteenth year, the STAR program included the California Standards Tests (CST) designed specifically to measure California’s content standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.  In addition to the CST, students in grade 5 were assessed in Science Standards and students in grade 8 were assessed in Science and History Social Science Standards.  Student results for the California Standards Tests are reported as Performance Levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic, and Far Below Basic.

The California Modified Assessment (CMA) was administered to students in grades 3-8, who have disabilities, and whose individualized education plan (IEP) indicated they would be assessed in ELA, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Student results for the CMA are reported as performance levels, as stated above.

The Standards-based Test in Spanish (STS) was administered to students in grades 2-8, who are Spanish-speaking English learners who receive instruction in Spanish, or Spanish-speaking English learners who have been enrolled in a school in the United States for less than 12 months.

Annual STAR testing is just one of the ways that Hanford Elementary School District measures student progress.  In addition to STAR testing, students in all grades have regular reading, writing, and mathematics assessments that document their progress toward English Language Arts and Mathematics Standards.

Hanford Elementary School District is dedicated to the belief that all students can and will meet California State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  We continue to focus all of our resources on improving student achievement.  Please plan to work closely with your child’s teacher to insure that our instructional program is meeting his/her academic needs.  It’s very important that we work together so that your child can continue to grow.

If you have questions about your child’s STAR reports, please feel free to contact your child’s school.

VOLUNTEERS/CHAPERONES

In order for parents to be a chaperone for school sponsored events or volunteer in the classroom, you must go through the application process.  Each year a new application must be submitted and approved by the HESD Board of Trustees, even if you have been approved in the past.  If you have not been previously approved, the application process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months.  Please remember, chaperones will not be able to attend study trips if they are not approved for the 2011-2012 school year.  If you have any questions or concerns, contact Lily Garcia at 585-3805.

MINIMUM DAY

Every Wednesday is a minimum day – Please pick up your children on time.

WELLNESS POLICY

It is vital that we as employees of HESD understand and adhere to the HESD Wellness Policy. It specifically states “Schools, to the extent possible, will not use foods or beverages that do not meet nutritional standards”.  In order to support our policy, as of October 1, 2009 we will no longer accept sweet treats for birthday snacks.  Parents are still encouraged to celebrate student birthdays by offering an alternative to sweet treats such as a goody bag with pencils, erasers, crayons, etc.  Another fun idea is to donate a hardback book to the library in honor of your student.  However, if you bring an edible treat, any of the following items are acceptable:

·   Fresh Fruit

·   Bananas

·   Watermelon

·   Strawberries

·   Apples

·   Granola Bars

·   Applesauce

·   Yogurt

·   Raisins

·   Pretzels

·   Fresh Veggies

·   Cucumbers

·   Zucchini w/dip

·   Celery w/PB

·   Carrots w/dip

PARENT TEACHER CLUB

Communication between school and home is essential for student success.  You can contribute to the educational enrichment of all Washington Elementary School students by actively participating in our Parent Teacher Club.  Please join us for our PTC meetings scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at 3:00 pm in room 401.

READY

READY is a great free afterschool program open to your child from 2:00pm-6:00pm Monday through Friday. READY is designed to offer homework assistance and academic opportunities in math, language arts, and science. Additionally, we offer enriching activities, recreation, and fun-filled games while our tutors help shape the minds of the future. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please stop by our office for an application.  You may contact Sheila Kurtz at 585-3629 with any questions or concerns.

READY REMINDER – Each first Wednesday of the month is a mandatory early dismissal.  Students must be picked up by 4:00pm.

ASBESTOS

The Hanford Elementary School District under Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, is required to develop and implement a management plan for dealing with the presence of asbestos-containing materials in our schools.  Our school was built asbestos free.  This plan is available for your inspection in the school office.  A copy of all school plans is also available in the District Office, located at 714 N. White Street.  For more information, please contact Vallerie Dunn at 585-3628.

MEDICATION

If your child has a medical condition and needs to be medicated during the school day, you may request an Administration of Medication Form from the office.  Once the child’s physician and the parent/guardian complete the form appropriately, the medication can then be administered at school.

Upon written request by the parent/guardian and with the approval of the student’s physician, a student with an existing medical condition that requires frequent monitoring, testing, or treatment may be allowed to self administer their own medication.  This is practice commonly used for students diagnosed with Asthma.

CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS

Each year, four days are designated for each classroom to participate in a celebration.  If assistance is required, the teachers will send home requests for items needed and adult helpers.  Individuals who are invited to assist in the classroom by the teacher must sign in/out through the office.  We respectfully allow only designated adults to enter the classroom.  All celebrations will be held during last 30 minutes of the day.

Visitors will not be allowed in the classroom before the following times:

K @ 11:30, Grades 1-3 @ 11:40, Grades 4-6 @ 11:50.

AIR QUALITY

As a district, we participate in the Air Quality Flag Program with the San Joaquin Valley Air Control District.  The goal of the program is to educate faculty, staff, students and parents on air quality and protect them from air pollution exposure. This will improve student health, decrease absenteeism and promote scholastic achievement.

On a daily basis, we monitor the air quality closely and make accommodations as necessary to ensure student safety.  Part of the program includes displaying a flag to define the air quality for the day.  When the air quality reaches a red unhealthy status, a rainy day schedule will be followed. More information is available at http://www.valleyair.org/index.htm.

If your child has lost a clothing article, please take some time to check the rolling cart located under the awning near the cafeteria. Any unclaimed clothing articles found on campus are placed in it.  For your convenience the rolling cart is set out daily.

STUDENT ABSENCES

It is important for students to attend school on a regular basis to receive the best education possible.  When students are frequently absent, they miss valuable instruction time and may begin to fall behind in their school work.  We ask for your support in ensuring your child arrives to school on time daily.  If your student is going to be absent, you may call the attendance hot-line any time at 585-3807.  When leaving your message, please remember to provide your child’s first and last name, teacher name, and the reason for their absence.  If an absence is not “cleared” by a parent/guardian within 5 days, the absence will remain “uncleared” and will be considered Unexcused.  Doctor notes will also only be accepted up to the 5th day following the student’s return to school.
